one striking two-color ink illustration featured in the
January 1977 Field & Stream Magazine and a recent painting featured in Arthur’s 2010 Fly-Fishing Calendar (December

Mike Stidham
continues to produce exquisite paintings of fish in their natural
environment, from the depths of the open ocean to the wandering creeks of
the Northeast and West. Mike is considered by many to be among the finest
living artists capturing these species as they would be seen in their
natural habitats and he will be featured in the upcoming
Western Art & Architecture Magazine covering just that –
his position as a true leader in his field.
Renowned
Montana writer and outdoorsman Todd Wilkinson has compiled
the article on Mike and his work as among the very finest you can find
in the market today. The proof is in the pudding, with Mike breaking a
record for a painting sold at this years May 2010 fundraising
event for the Two-Fly Foundation on the North Platte River in WY,
in which Mike’s 24 X 30 oil sold for a record $15,000! In light of
this, these two recent paintings are a great opportunity for any
collector.

Flick Ford, has proven once again that he can paint just
about anything – and do so with the same conviction he does with each fish
painting he creates.
I recently caught up with Flick and he informed me of
his next project – A book on the major tropical fish species of the world,
those that one might typically find in fish tanks and aquariums in homes
from all over the world. Flick is already beginning to create paintings of
the various species and we’ll look forward to seeing these as they become
available to the market. Quite a departure from the gamefish he normally
paints, these images will serve to show that Flick is the master of his
technique, regardless of subject matter!
On this topic, here is another
good example of Flick’s departure from gamefish subjects, in which he
captures a living creature – a Lobster no less – and does so in such a way
as you feel as if the subject is going to swim or, in this case, crawl
right off the paper! But Flick still loves his gamefish, and here is
another recent gallery addition that shows his masterful technique!

Al Barnes has had
a busy winter and spring traveling to various locations, painting and
fishing (not necessarily in that order) and I recently caught up with Al.
He indicated the last few years have been very good for him and his
collectors have been eagerly acquiring his Flats scenes from all over the
southeast and southern waters, be it the Keys, the Bahamas, the Turks and
Caicos or the Berrys and Acklins. Al has spent enough time in all these
areas and has amassed a body of work that allows him to create wonderful
Flats-Fishing scenes that any southern water angler would covet. But Al
has also had requests for blue-water subjects for which, as many of you
know, Al is also well known.
Well, Al has answered the call and has just recently
completed this beautiful rendering of two Striped Marlin, lit up as they
move in on the bait. Any of you blue-water anglers will recognize what Al
has captured here, and you also know the rush you experience when you
actually hook up with one of these majestic fish!

I recently spoke with
Roger Blum who joked
with me that the anchor-ice was finally out of all his favorite fishing
spots in Wisconsin and he finally plans to get back in the water and chase
some fish. Having a chance to fish with Roger last fall out here in New
England, I became aware of the fact that Roger is at home on the water as
much as he is in front of a canvas – a testimony to the fact that he is
truly an artist and angler and he paints that which he knows. I hope to
entice Roger out here again soon to chase some of our local New England
fish and perhaps paint a few local scenes.
Until such time, Roger continues
to provide us with beautiful images of the waters closest to his studio
(and his heart, no doubt), such as this watercolor we just received.

Eldridge Hardie
has been very busy in the last several months with various events and
shows and has had a full plate in 2010. Among the upcoming events in the
second half of the year, Eldridge will participate in shows at the
National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, OK
in June, the Coeur d’Alene Art Auction in July in Reno, NV
and the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, WY in
September – A pretty full schedule, I would say, for any artist.
Congratulations to Eldridge!
Eldridge continues to set a little time aside to
create for us, and sent us this watercolor recently.

Nick Mayer,
like myself living in Vermont, embraces this time of the year as one of
the best times to chase various wild species of Brooks, Browns and
Rainbows in the abundant and pure waters Vermont has to offer. We both
endure the long winters in anticipation of those first evenings on local
waters in which the bugs come off and the fish are hungry and aggressive.
I met Nick a little while back and we both shared our anticipation for the
upcoming season and he filled me in on all that he has been working on.
He reported that he was among several artists at a recent juried art
exhibition in Providence, RI, in which this grand work was the featured
work on their invitation, and a grand painting it is, at a whopping 78”
length – that’s over six-feet long! An image on a computer does little
justice to this magnificent painting, but you will have to come to the
gallery to see it first-hand!

Nick Mayer
'Humpback Whale
James Prosek has
been busy in the field on many projects, including work on eels featured
in the January 2010 National Geographic Magazine, as well as being very
active with a number of conservation organizations, including World Trout
Fund and Abel Reels, all in support of various conservation efforts. In
the midst of all that James has on his plate, he still manages to create a
painting or two for us and here is one fine example that has recently come
to us.

'Greenland Char'
I’ll keep you posted as things develop on
various fronts and there will be many updates, as I have just touched on
things here. You will be receiving additional information on shows and
events and, as always, I’ll continue to send out new images as we receive
them. There is always much more than I can write here on which to report,
so keep in touch and I’ll do the same. We have many
more great works from all of our Sporting Artists here at the
J. Russell Jinishian Gallery, including
Robert Blazek,
Peter Bowe,
Keith Cardnell,
Glen Hacker,
Simon Haycraft,
Richard Dana Kuchta,
Robert Lagasse,
Jake McFaul,
David Mellor,
Don Ray,
Mark Susinno,
Kent Ullberg and many
others.
If you find yourself near the gallery this summer, stop
in, say hello and see all of these great works first hand. Russ and I
always look forward to seeing you and hearing your great stories, so keep
in touch!

Stanley
Meltzoff’s long-anticipated book,
Stanley Meltzoff, Picture Maker, has been
receiving tremendous accolades from the industry and has garnered plenty
of ink in the last several months. From publications such as
Marlin and Billfishing Magazines to Soundings
Magazine here in CT, as well as many others, there has been
no shortage of press on the book and the remarkable story of this master’s
career.
For those of you not aware, noted Author &
Historian Mike Rivkin assembled this compelling biography of
Meltzoff’s illustrious and distinguished career, coupling his words
with Stanley’s to tell the story of this remarkable man’s life and his
extensive contributions to the art world. Mike and I are currently in
discussions with the Society Of Illustrators in New York City
to mount a major retrospective exhibition on Stanley’s work in the near
future. We’ll keep you posted on the developments and give you specifics
as they unfold. Additionally, Mike and I will be attending the
ICAST Show in Las Vegas, the worlds largest sport-fishing trade
show. The event is July 14-16 and you will find us at Booth 1711,
if you are attending the show.
In the meantime, this Meltzoff
painting has just come to us from a private collection and a spectacular
painting it is! One of Stanley’s favorite subjects – Striped Bass – this
painting was prominently featured in the September 4, 1967
Sports Illustrated article titled ‘The Striped Bass
in Canvas Chronicle’. This is a truly unique opportunity for a
Meltzoff painting with great provenance!

Arthur Shilstone
and I had a recent visit with Brooke Chilvers,
world-renowned Sporting Art writer, editor and columnist, who is composing
a major feature on Arthur in Gray’s Sporting Journal,
due to be out the first part of 2011. Arthur was chosen by Gray’s as one of the premiere Sporting
Artists of our time and the article will coincide well with a major
retrospective exhibition we plan to host early next year, incorporating
not only Arthur’s Sporting Art but also work from his illustration days,
encompassing a broad range of topics, including his tour in WWII,
his work for NASA with the first Space Shuttle launches
and his various assignments
for publications throughout the world. We’ll keep you posted on the event
and provide more detail as we get closer.
Arthur will also be a
featured artist in an event we are currently planning for this fall at the
Orvis Flagship Store in Manchester, VT. We are in
discussions with the folks at Orvis to co-host a major Sporting
Art exhibition – details and dates will be forthcoming – that
will likely hang through the holidays, with a kick-off reception mid-fall.
