DISCOVERY and CHATHAM departing from San Francisco Bay, November 24th, 1792
George Vancouver’s voyage in 1791 was a continuation of the exploration and mapping expeditions of James Cook in furtherance of Great Britain’s territorial claims in the Pacific Northwest.
After almost three years of surveying, Vancouver departed the coast having charted the North American west coast from the present-day Oregon to Alaska, countered Spanish influence in the Pacific, and disproving the theory of the Northwest Passage.
