The Sardine Carrier
acrylic/mixed medium on board, 12" x 24"
$8,500
One recent summer on a boat trip in Boothbay Harbor, ME. we came upon an unusual boat moored in the inner harbor, a relic of Maine's long and historic fishing tradition. The boat was the Sardine Carrier Jacob Pike. Abandoned by her owner she sank during a coastal storm off Bailey Island, ME. She was one of the last of her kind in a fishing industry that once thrived in coastal fishing villages in Down East Maine until over fishing and foreign competition closed the fishery down, with the last cannery closing in 2010. I have depicted her in better days with a full crew, original Maine Cannery labels, somewhat exaggerated Sardines and a touch of humor.
