The Schooner Yacht America is perhaps the most famous sailing yacht ever. It was under The New York Yacht Club’s flag of owner Commodore John Cox Stevens, whose victory of the 100 Guinea Cup Race held in Cowes off the Isle of Wight in 1851 that forever changed the name of the coveted victor’s trophy for that international sailing regatta – now the oldest trophy in all of sports, to the “America’s Cup.” While like so many vessels of the time, she went through a number of owners including both the Union and Confederate Navies, and the U.S. Naval Academy, and eventually, she was destroyed in 1942 when the shed she was stored in collapsed. While a few pieces of her still survive (her tiller is on display at The New York Yacht Club) – she’s also had not one but three full sized replicas made of her over the years. One by Beer magnate and yachtsman Rudolph J Schaefer (in 1967), another in 1995, and yet another in Bulgaria in 2005.
