Arrivals and Departures, San Francisco Harbor, early 1900s

watercolor, 13” x 21”

Like the entrance to a great, moated castle, the Golden Gate has been kept busy by the comings and goings of the great and the humble ever since the Gold Rush days. Here is a typical panorama of the early 1900s. The Scots built bark FALLS OF CLYDE towing purposefully out to sea, the barkentine KOHALA sweeping in regally under sail and around the ferries, launches, tugs and feluccas going about their lawful business, unimpressed by the display.
