H.M. Ships COSSACK and COMET Landing Troops at Santander, 23 June 1808
acrylic, 15" x 24"
$8,700
This is an incident from the Peninsular Wars, when the Royal Navy was attempting to counter French forces massing on the Spanish coast. The Spanish were beginning to resist the French incursions by then, so the landing, in which Santander's forts and defenses were destroyed by the British, met with little local resistance. I've been sailing into Santander several times over the last few years, so this subject more or less suggested itself. Also, I do very few oils or acrylics these days, so this picture is a bit of an exception.
