Awaiting the Tide in Boston Harbor
oil on canvas, 24” x 48”
$30,000
In the 18th and 19th century, Boston Harbor was the busiest port in America - boasting over 80 commercial wharfs and welcoming vessels of all types from around the world. This gorgeous painting captures a still moment - in the manner of America's first Maritime painter, Fitz Henry Lane (1804-1865) - when an astonishing variety of vessels are seen awaiting a breeze, and movement of the tide, as the sunset gives a warm, orange glow to the scene. From left to right: A Coastal trading schooner, Boston Pilot Boat #2, LOUISE, a Steam Tug, a small Rowing Wherry, another Topsail Schooner in profile, Nantucket Whaling Ship NAUTILUS, and on the far right, another whaling vessel.
