New York Forties Racing on Long Island Sound
oil on canvas, 18” x 24” (framed dimensions: 23” x 29”)
$11,500
The New York Yacht Club (NYYC) Forties came into existence several years after the NYYC Fifties, around 1917. The Fifties were expensive to run and many owners were looking for a less expensive craft, which is one of the reasons NYYC Forties were designed. In this painting, a raildown summer squall is impending off Long Island and most of the Forties have reduced sail considerably.
Artist Richard Loud commented, “The power and fury of a summer squall has always amazed me. To be caught in one at sea in a small sailing yacht is a humbling yet, at the same time, an exhilarating experience.
