The First America’s Cup, Yacht AMERICA Salutes Queen Victoria, August 22, 1851

oil, 30” x 40”

$38,000

Artist Russ Kramer has used his powerful artistic imagination to recreate the activity aboard AMERICA on this historic day in yachting history, having been the first to cross the finish line in the invitational race for the “Hundred Guinea Cup.”

We’re aboard AMERICA just as she’s passing the Queen’s Royal Yacht. Queen Victoria was watching the race from her royal yacht, and at one point asked, “Who is second?” after seeing "AMERICA" come over the horizon. Her attendant reportedly replied, “Ah, Your Majesty, there is no second.” As shown above, the Royal Yacht VICTORIA AND ALBERT falls in alongside, New York Yacht Club Commodore and AMERICA owner John Cox Stevens orders the crew to dip her colors and doff their caps to the royal family in a gesture of respect and sportsmanship. Shown onboard AMERICA are Cox, Captain Richard Brown, First Mate Nelson Comstock, Colonel James Hamilton, English Pilot Robert Underwood and Edwin Stevens. Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and their son Albert Edward can be seen on the observation deck of the royal yacht. Albert Edward is dressed in a sailor suit – the first child ever to do so.
