Big Class Racing Off, Fort Adams, Newport, RI
oil on canvas, 16" x 20"
$14,500
Built in 1799, Fort Adams in Newport, Rhode Island, served as a strategic military site in the War of 1812, the Mexican/American War, the Spanish/American War, and in World Wars I and II. Today, it still commands the east passage of the entrance to Narragansett Bay. Newport Harbor has been considered the headquarters of the American yacht racing scene, hosting many America’s Cup Races, and other international sailing events, including the Newport to Bermuda Race, since the early 1900’s. Tim Thompson’s painting captures the magnificence of two New York Yacht Club yachts racing off the Fort.
