Born in 1950 in a small village in Holland in the neighborhood of Rotterdam, he was always fascinated by everything about sai¬ling. As the son of a tugboat captain he spent from his 5th year on, all his spare time on the water, endlessly made drawings of boats on newspapers and pieces of paper. The foundation for all his marine art is based on those early experiences. After school he sailed for 8 years on tugboats and 2 years as a captain. Since 1998 he has been the General Manager of a Ferryboat Company.
In 1980, he began studying drawing and painting. Now he paints with oil, watercolors and gouache. “I like to know everything about the ships before I start painting. I do my research in museums and through archi¬ves. I don't use the information only as a painter, but also as a publisher. I regularly publish articles about marine painters and Sail, Tug, and Steamboats, and their owners for the Dutch Maritime Magazines”.
He along with his friend, marine artist Tim Thompson, spent time on the Solent during the great Jubilee in 2001, sketching the activities and sharing experiences as artists.
