Coming Home; Packetship Devonshire

gouache, 10 1/2" x 15"

$4,000

The painting depicts the American packet ship Devonshire on a partly cloudy morning as she awaits a pilot to come aboard from the small schooner off her bow. The Devonshire was built in the yard of Westervelt & Mackay at New York in 1848. She was just over 173 feet in length and weighed in at 1,149 tons. Her best passage from England to America was 19 days while under the house flag of the Black X Line.
